Entry Requirements

Candidates should –
(a) have 5 years’ relevant experience in the past 7 years (from 18 January 2013 to 17 January 2020) involving one of the following skills –
(i) undertaking general cleansing and labouring duties;
(ii) grave digging / exhumation / removal of dead bodies;
(iii) collection of urine samples in the slaughterhouses; or
(iv) assisting in carcases recording / inspection and other labour duties in the slaughterhouse; and
(b) be able to communicate in Cantonese and simple English; read simple Chinese and simple English; write simple Chinese or simple English.
Remarks
(1) The post is open to male and female.
(2) Candidates will be required to pass a trade test.
(3) For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (BL) and promoting a culture of learning of BL in the community, applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their BL knowledge. The BL test result will be taken into account only if two candidates are considered equal in all other aspects.
 

Duties

Main Duties of Workman I:
(a) grave digging; exhumation; anti-illegal burial operations; collection, removal and encoffining of unclaimed dead bodies from hospitals and public mortuaries and other associated duties;
(b) operating the ancillary machinery of specialized vehicles to facilitate vehicle washing activities; operating vehicle washing machine; washing all types of vehicles and performing cleansing work and related duties in depots;
(c) performing manual work in relation to import control and inspection of food animals / poultry at entry points and slaughterhouses such as restraining food animals for detection of diseases; collection of urine samples for testing of prohibited / restricted drugs, recording movements of food animals in and out of slaughterhouses as well as other associated duties;
(d) assisting in recording condemned meat and offal; coding, decoding and stamping of carcases; assisting in carcase inspection and other labour duties in the slaughterhouses; and
(e) performing manual work and providing support services in hawker control operations as well as other associated duties.
Note:
(1) Workmen I work 45 hours per week (normally 6 days excluding lunch breaks). They are required to wear uniform, work outdoor and perform duties of an obnoxious nature or under harsh conditions, e.g. removal of dead bodies, performing emergency / typhoon / other natural disasters duties. They may be required to work shifts, irregular hours, overnight, in adverse weather condition and in remote areas, e.g. outlying islands, border, airport etc.
(2) Workmen I will be subject to posting within the Workman I grade and carry out different duties in other Government bureaux / departments when need arises.

Terms of Appointment

A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, he / she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.

Model Scale 1 Pay Scale Point 3 (HK$13,885 per month) to Model Scale 1 Pay Scale Point 13 ($16,975 per month)
